COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

East York Concert Band

For over 60 years, the East York Concert Band has brought the joy of music to audiences across the Greater Toronto Area.  This band is a non-profit, community organization with talented members ranging in age from their early 20s to their late 80s. They perform throughout the year at a wide array of local venues including hospitals, legions, seniors’ homes and churches, in addition to private functions and our annual holiday and spring concerts.

The members of this ensemble were a joy to work with.  I had the distinct pleasure of conducting this fine ensemble for 9 seasons (2012-2021).

Northdale Concert Band

Between 2014 and 2020, I had the privilege of conducting one of the finest community ensembles in the greater Toronto area. The Northdale Concert Band is a 45 pc ensemble that performs to communities across southern Ontario, and across Canada for the past 50 years.  The ensemble is known for their dynamic programming, and for commissioning and premiering new canadain works.

Milton Concert Band

After moving to Milton in 2005, MCB’s founders Angela Rozario and Cheryl Ciccarelli quickly recognized the lack of performing opportunities for adult amateur musicians in the Milton area. Former members of the Etobicoke Community Concert Band, the two soon grew tired of the commute to Etobicoke. Given the number of new residents in this area, the wealth of cultural events and the wonderful existing arts community, it seemed unbelievable that there was not already a community band!   I too had been performing with the Etobicoke Community Band, and knew Cheryl and Angela very well.

In 2007, during a rehearsal break, I was approached by both ladies who inquired if I had any interest in conducting a new band they were organizing. The thought was both intriguing, yet equally frightening.  Up until this point, I had only dabled in conducting smaller groups such as quartets, or church choirs.  In hindsight, I’m glad I accepted the opportunity to be this ensembles Founding Music Director as it truly became the springboard to what has become an exciting, and envigorating career as a conductor and music educator.

So many great memories with this ensemble that I will cherish for a lifetime!
